On January 12, 2026, Melchie Dumornay aka “Corventina “ to her worldwide fans, made history for Haiti by being crowned the winner of the 433 Women's Player of the Year 2025 fan vote, becoming the first Haitian player ever to receive this global fan-voted award. This achievement, widely reported by Haitian media on that date, is seen as a major milestone for Haitian sports and a symbol of national pride, showcasing the power of fan mobilization from Haiti and its diaspora.

Yes, Haiti is making history through sports, particularly with its global football icon Melchie Dumornay. On this January 12, 2010, 16 years ago, Haiti was in the news for the disastrous earthquake that killed more 300k people and Melchie couldn't have one of them, yet the Almighty sparred her from this horrible terror. Now 16 years later, Dumornay has accomplished a remarkable feat to become a global sports award from 433 Women FC Awards. Just like the Men’s National Team has won their qualification on FIFA's World Cup on November 18th, 2025 on Haiti’s Day Bataille de Vertieres that led Haiti to become the first black republic and independent nation. Melchie did it again for our nation.

These historical archives bring us closer as a nation as we remember the tragic earthquake that killed thousands of Haitians and the call of duty and moral obligation for unity, economic development, and social harmony.

Dumornay secured 55% of over 856,000 global votes, defeating two-time Ballon d'Or Féminin winner Alexia Putellas in the final round. Her performances for Olympic Lyonnais (OL Lyonnes) and the Haitian national team throughout 2025, including a top-five finish for the Globe Soccer's Women's Player of the Year award, positioned her as a rising global star.

The whole Haitian sport community stood behind the Haitian football star Melchie Daëlle Dumornay, known to fans worldwide as "Corventina", to make this history just like they stood behind the Men's National Team on their Qualifiation to FIFA World Cup 2026™ - Canada, Mexico and the United States.

Prior to winning this Award she became  the first Haitian woman ever nominated for the Ballon d’Or Féminin — one of the most prestigious individual awards in world football. Dumornay became the first Haitian to be nominated for the prestigious Ballon d'Or Féminin (2025), a massive feat for Haitian football.

The 22-year-old attacking midfielder, who plays for Olympique Lyonnais Féminin, earned her spot among the 30 nominees after a stellar 2024–2025 season. Dumornay scored 22 goals and provided 9 assists, finishing as the league’s second-highest scorer and playing a key role in Lyon’s Arkema Première Ligue title-winning campaign.

At the club level, Olympique Lyonnais was eliminated early in the UEFA Women’s Champions League. So, Melchie didn’t win the prestigious award  because Haiti did not participate in any major international tournaments during the 2024-25 season. It is imperative that the Haitian federation of Football and other institutions like Haiti Sports Authority to take a stance against poor sport management and ensure all sport teams and players play their part to elevate the sport’s competitive status and future development.

For global sports Awards, like Ballon d'Or Feminin, there is some criteria like individual performances, team performances and sportsmanship, and international competitions that are highly rated for a top finish on global sports awards like the Ballon d'Or.

So,international competitions carry substantial weight in Ballon d’Or selection for players who are highly skilled and capable on both sides.

This is where we must work together in increase players chances to make a better representation. Dumornay’s skill, talent, and discipline is unmatched, yet she needs to compete for Haitian Women National Team. As Haiti qualifies for major tournaments, we would have more of our players to compete at the highest levels and secure multiple tournaments and trophies, or awards.

This is Why BHaiti Sports Authority is advocating for modern sports facilities to improve players performance and increase their competitiveness at the national level. As they compete rigorously with their clubs at home, they will be better equipped and prepared to face their competitions at any tournaments and championships.

Melchie’s individual talent and her physicality are impressive at the club level when she steps on the field . Yet, she still has to manage the pressure of her national team that is outside of her control. A   She had a standout season at the club level last year with OL Lyon. She led the team in scoring across all competitions with 22 goals in 29 games, playing primarily as a midfielder.

She was named the UEFA Women’s Champions League Young Player of the Season, contributing significantly to the club’s semifinal run. Dumornay scored twice in a 5-1 aggregate win over Bayern Munich in the quarterfinals, including a crucial equalizer in the second leg.

Before all started rolling for her and grew her fan base , she won the CONCACAF Player of the Year in 2024 and 2025 recognizing her dominance in the region. This was truly a bold statement that she was a true sport icon for both  her team and the region.
